i hate you and your stupid face, jolyon/rupert graves. stop making me want to smash things out of pain and frustration.
the telegram
holly confesses to her father that the reason her brother jolly and fiancé val enlisted was because of a dare between them, after her brother disapproved of her impending marriage to val. she informs her father that because she feels partially at fault for jolly and val going to war, that she will join her sister june as a nurse on the battlefront.
jolyon falters at the reality of all three of his children being in the war, and knowing there is a chance that none of them will return alive.
soames: “you’ve been in paris, i hear.”
jolyon: “yes.”
soames: “you didn’t happen to see irene, i suppose?”
jolyon: “yes, i saw her.”
soames: “i’ve decided - and i think you better know - i’m going to ask her to come back to me.”
jolyon: “you have asked her, you know.”
soames: “that was a shock to her. but if she thinks it over, she’ll see it’s the only way out for us.”
jolyon: “that wasn’t my impression of her state of mind.”
soames: “i don’t altogether care about your impression. what i need is your undertaking that you won’t influence her against me.”
jolyon: “i don’t know why you think i have any influence. but if i did have, i would use it in the direction of her happiness.”
soames: “against me?”
jolyon: “i’m against any woman living with a man whom she dislikes.”
soames: “oh, ‘dislikes.’ and is that the sort of opinion you put into her mind? she is my wife!”
jolyon: “in name.”
soames: “in law, in fact.”
